Our first snow day arrived this past week, which always brings excitement for students (never for the the teachers, of course!). I am in Chicago this weekend for a dance convention with my daughter, hoping the possible storm on its way doesn't develop into much.... The snow day didn’t slow us down at all though - we had a great week!

With Valentine's Day coming up, your child is invited to bring in Valentines for the entire class. I will send out a list of names to you next week if you'd like to get a head start on them.

  • Coming up:
    • Star Student: Ava Mullinex
    • Tuesday, January 19: LIBRARY - Please remember your books!
    • Wednesday, January 20 - PE Day
    • February 8-9 - Winter Break, No school
  • Reading: We continued our work exploring nonfiction texts this week as we worked on reading our books like we are teachers, explored the structure of nonfiction texts, practiced retelling a nonfiction story telling what we learned, and used pictures and diagrams to helps us determine the words. We also logged on to Raz Kids again during our computer lab time. I love seeing so many students logging in at home as well.
  • Writing: This week we began writing our how to stories. We practiced telling our stories and acting them out with partners, worked on sketching out the steps, and added precise teaching words to be more clear. At home if you notice something your child might be able to write a how to story about, be sure to point it out to them as a possible topic.
  • Math: Place value concepts continued this week as we worked on representing two digit numbers with tens sticks and circles. We also worked on common number reversals and confusions with teen numbers (80 vs. 18, 50 vs. 15, etc.), and we ended the week with an introduction to to adding numbers with double digits.
  • Social Studies: We continued our history unit this week with studying Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. As your child what he/she learned about these important people in our history. This week we will learn the story of Ruby Bridges and learn about Abraham Lincoln.
For your children,

~ Holly R. Mueller
