Volunteer Appreciation (and More)

This week we give thanks to the many volunteers that have dedicated their time to our classroom and our school this year. This is my 17th year of teaching, and I have never had a year with even close to this many volunteers. I truly believe students would not be progressing at the rate they are without the time this group sacrifices to be here. Many thanks to all of you!

I would like to recognize this group of regular volunteers throughout the year:

We have been very busy in our classroom! We have combined our current reading unit, math unit, and science unit on Life Cycles to write some amazing All About books. Your child hopefully has shared what topics they have written about. We all chose an animal first, now they may choose any topic they'd like. They have been researching their topic, taking notes, and writing a book with multiple sections/chapters. I am truly impressed by the work they are doing! It is just so exciting to see 1st graders engaged in research and writing!

We have been learning first hand about life cycles by observing caterpillars over the last week. Hopefully your child shared the excitement that happened yesterday. If not, please ask them to tell you. We have been observing and recording our observations. We should see butterflies soon!

In math we are working our way through our measurement and geometry unit. Continue to encourage practice with telling time to the hour and half hour at home. This week we learned about halves and fourths, as well as making new shapes by combining two or more shapes. We also touched on 3D shapes. Next week we will be measuring using nonstandard units of measure.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
